SIERRA LEONE’S REFUGEE ALL STARS

Reuben Koroma and Grace Ampomah were born in Sierra Leone, a country that has long been torn apart by brutal conflict. As violent attacks take place, ordinary people are forced out of their homes, ending up crossing borders into neighboring countries and living in refugee camps.

After they were married, Reuben and Grace Koroma fled Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, in 1997. They made their way into Guinea and settled at a camp called Kalia. It wasn’t long before they’d met up with some people they knew from back in Freetown. With two old electric guitars donated by a charity, Reuben and his friends formed the Refugee All Stars.

Their music was bright, upbeat, and likely to get people up and dancing, though the lyrics told of the struggles of being a refugee and of having to leave home.

The band took their music from camp to camp, spreading joy. As they went, a film crew recorded a documentary that would go on to introduce the world to the Refugee All Stars.

“One day you are suffering in this world,” said Reuben. “And the next day you are healing other people’s pain through music.”

Once the war was over, they returned to Freetown, to continue making music. They released an album of recordings called Living Like a Refugee that had all been recorded live around the campfires of the Guinea refugee camps. The album was an international success.

The band is still touring, recording, and spreading their message around the world, using their music to draw attention to the plight of displaced people everywhere. Most of the money they make is sent home to help their families and villages.
